Concepts of Engineering and Technology is a precursor to our recently implemented Aerospace curriculum focused around high power rocketry. This course comes from a group called SystemsGo out of Texas, where it serves as the first step in a full five year rocketry curriculum; by the end of the program students are designing, manufacturing, assembling and flying professional grade sounding rockets in cooperation with the United States military. While we're not quite at that level (I'm working on it!), this course provides an incredibly solid foundation for students interested in pursuing engineering based careers. Furthermore, it offers a solid background in leadership and teamwork skills that are necessary in a multitude of disciplines, so I encourage students to try it out even if they're not particularly interested in engineering (yet).
The course first examines the skills necessary to succeed in this type of environment, and once this foundation has been established students explore each branch of engineering from Civil/Structural to Biotechnology by working together on a hands-on construction project involving that discipline. As each unit wraps up, we'll be looking for locations we can visit to see that field in action, whether it's a university or a job site. I believe firmly that students learn by doing, and with this class I'm trying to walk that line as much as possible. I encourage you to take a look at the SystemsGo website, and to ask your student about the class as well.
